Footscray

Footscray is a suburb 5 km west of central Melbourne. Footscray is characterised by a very diverse, multicultural central shopping area, which reflects the successive waves of immigration experienced by Melbourne, and by Footscray in particular. Once a centre for Italian and former Yugoslavian migrants, it is now a hub for a large Vietnamese population and increasing East African immigrants.
Footscray is home to hundreds of popular, inexpensive eateries – from Italian, Ethiopian, Turkish, Vietnamese and Chinese food, to a growing gastro pub scene. With countless food stores, Asian grocers and market stalls competing for attention, the uninitiated shopper could be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed. The Footscray Market is a large indoor fresh produce and seafood market, with many food and general good stalls, catering particularly to the various ethnicities and local restaurants. Located opposite Footscray Railway Station. Another large market in Footscray is Little Saigon, noisy, vibrant and crowded, Little Saigon sells a wide array of Asian produce, seafood, fruit and vegetables. With more than a dozen independent Asian grocery shops, bakeries and delis, just about any Asian ingredient you can think of is available here.
