Melbourne - Carlton

Melbourne - Carlton

For a taste of Italy, Carlton is the place to be. When Italian migrants flocked to Melbourne after WW11 most settled around Carlton, so theres no such thing as a bad Expresso.  While it’s residents now are from every sort of background, the legacy of  Italian and Jewish migrants who settled here are some great restaurants, cafes and a European ambience particularly in Lygon and Rathdowne Streets.

The character of Carlton has also been influenced by the student culture of Melbourne University. Sadly with gentrification of the suburb less students can afford to live in the beautiful Victorian terrace houses that line the streets. But it is still a popular destination for the young, and their presence creates a lively feel.  There are great shops, including book shops, cinemas and of course excellent coffee shops along Lygon Street. If you find it hard to resist pastries, walk around the corner to Brunetti ( Faraday St) for one of the most tempting selections in the city.  2 km to the city center.
