Hobart
Founded in 1803, Hobart is not only the jeweled, state capital of Tasmania; it is also the second oldest city in Australia coming right after Sydney. Hobart sits on both sides of the Derwent River at lies as the base of Mt. Wellington’s slopes. Its streets are narrow and intimate, its buildings, which are made of brick and sandstone, sit intimately close and it has a most quiet and intimate appeal. Hobart is internationally famous among the yachting community as the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which starts in Sydney on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas Day). The arrival of the yachts is celebrated as part of the Hobart Summer Festival, a food and wine festival beginning just after Christmas and ending in mid-January. The Taste of Tasmania is a major part of the festival, where locals and visitors can taste fine local and international food and wine. Popular restaurant strips include Elizabeth St in North Hobart, and Salamanca Place near the waterfront, which is also host to Hobarts weekly farmers and arts and craft market
