Prahran & Windsor

With a more colorful and bohemian feel than their Toorak and South Yarra neighbors, Prahran and Windsor are where you’ll find some of the best retro clothing and bric a brac in Melbourne.

Prahran is also where you’ll find the famous Prahran market, which is one of the best places in Melbourne to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and deli items. But don’t be surprised to see a drag queen doing her shopping at the market in full make up and a tight sparkly dress at 9.00am on Saturday morning. She’s probably just left one of the gay bars you’ll find in the area. She’ll be there alongside mums, dads and toddlers, elderly people and groovy young things.

The streets of Windsor and Prahran are quaint and consist predominantly of charming single fronted Victorian terraces and with the city, Southbank, St Kilda and South Yarra nearby this popular area to live is a great base whilst staying in Melbourne.

WHAT TO SEE

The South Yarra end of Chapel St, between Commercial & Toorak Roads is a stylish strip for designer fashion with numerous clothing boutiques and many cafes along the way. Up at the other end of Chapel St, towards Dandenong Road is Windsor which is home to more diverse stores selling Retro clothing and alternative designer stores. Running off Chapel St, by Prahran Town Hall, Greville Street is another shopping alternative with more designer and retro clothing stores, record & bookshops, cafes & restaurants.
