Fitzroy & Carlton

For a taste of Italy, Carlton is the place to be. While it’s residents now are from every sort of background, there was a large influx of Italian and Jewish migrants who settled in the area postwar.
Their legacy are some great restaurants, cafes and a European ambience particularly in Lygon and Rathdowne Streets. The character of Carlton has also been influenced by the student culture of Melbourne University. Sadly with gentrification of the suburb less students can afford to live in the beautiful Victorian terrace houses that line the streets. But it is still a popular destination for the young, and their presence creates a lively feel.
Neighbouring Fitzroy is a place where you’ll find artists, migrants from all over the world, and “refugees” from less interesting places in Melbourne who all embrace Fitzroy’s community spirit.
Together these people have created a suburb where art, culture and coffee meet in a very down to earth manner.

WHAT TO SEE

Fitzroy is an edgy mix of alternative, artistic & trendy elements. A short walk down Brunswick, Gertrude or Smith Streets will take you to a fascinating collection of young designer and retro clothes shops, bookstores, cafes and restaurants or you can soak in some culture by visiting one of the many galleries.
Carltons main shopping strip is busy Lygon Street, with its shops and restaurants, this area also includes the historic Melbourne General Cemetery, Princes Park with Optus Oval (home to the Carlton Football Club) and the beautiful Carlton Gardens, with the striking, contemporary Melbourne Museum and the domed 19th century Royal Exhibition Building.
